Bilingual education in Xinjiang bridging gaps (People’s Daily)

By 2012, the central government will have invested 4.02 billion yuan ($591 million) in bilingual kindergarten education in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in an attempt to encourage preschool children from ethnic minorities to learn Mandarin in addition to their own language.

By Dana Beyerle Montgomery Bureau Chief MONTGOMERY | State school superintendent Joe Morton told legislators Wednesday that K-12 public schools need an additional $245 million in next year’s education budget, or as many as 3,543 teachers could lose their jobs.
