Obama administration officials were working Friday to secure the support of Maine’s two Republican senators for $26 billion in education and Medicaid aid to states expected to come up for a vote on Monday.

FRANKFORT — Gov. Steve Beshear’s plan to deal with a projected $996 million budget shortfall will not call for cutting higher education, the main funding formula for K-12 education and Medicaid, according to House Speaker Greg Stumbo.
