Senate Democrats on Monday accepted most education and health care cuts proposed by Gov. David Paterson for the 2010-11 fiscal year, but rejected his plan to allow grocery stores to sell wine, increase cigarette taxes and tax sugary beverages.

Hundreds of outraged students, parents, and teachers gathered outside Gov. David Paterson’s office on Thursday night to protest against school closings, budget cuts, and tuition hikes – all part of his proposed budget that would cut $1.4 billion from state education. In New York City, nine protests were organized by multiple education groups throughout the city’s five boroughs.
